What is an IP address (v4)?

An IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) address is a numeric identifier assigned to each device on a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol. It is used to uniquely identify devices and enable communication between them.

An IPv4 address consists of 32 bits and is usually written as four decimal numbers separated by periods. Each number (octet) can take on a value from 0 to 255. An example of an IPv4 address is 192.168.0.1.

Since IPv4 only uses 32-bit addresses, a total of about 4.3 billion unique addresses can be assigned. Due to the growing number of Internet devices, IPv4 addresses have become scarce, leading to the introduction of IPv6, which offers a larger address space.
